Which is the problem you're running into. If the program is 64-bit only the 64-bit drivers will respond.

If the program that calls it is 32-bit then only the 32-bit drivers will respond. However, it's limited by the calling process. TWAIN is the better option as it calls your scanner's software drivers directly.

It's why you click so many times to use it. Microsoft WIA (Windows Image Acquisition) is similar it's a built in Windows app/interface for talking with your scanner but is very limited. In printing you send to the Print Spooler (a program built into Windows) which manages the connection to the printer driver for you.
